Projects

1111 N. Gilbert
The new house being built at 1111 N. Gilbert (the first house north of Garfield School) was started by the Center for Children’s Services as a project to hire “at-risk” youth for the summer and teach them work skills.  Ground Breaking was in late May, and through June, July, and part of August the youth from the Center for Children’s Services built the house, put on the siding, porch, soffit and fascia.  The homeowners are Phil and Sandy Pucek, and along with their sons Matt and Bryant, they have put in many hours installing the roof and other aspects to get the house to where it is today.

The interior drywall is being hung at the present time, and after Blackie’s Heating and Cooling installs the furnace the drywall will be taped and finished.

1415  N.  Grant
The house being built at 1415 N. Grant Street is actually a rehab project and not a new home.  The house was originally a small, one bedroom, one bath home with less than 500 square feet.  After the original owner passed away, it was donated to Habitat for Humanity.  In the early spring of 2009 Habitat for Humanity along with Crossroads Christian Church and Second Church of  Christ broke ground for  a partnership build on the project.  The house was stripped to the bare walls, where we found considerable termite damage.  All the termite damage was replaced, then we began an addition onto the house that would make it a 3 bedroom, 2 bath home.  The homeowner, Leslie McMasters and her 2 sons are excited about being in the house which should be completed by the spring of 2010.

Fire Station

The Fire Station is a new venture for Habitat for Humanity of Danville.  The City of Danville donated the building to Habitat for Humanity in July, 2008.

Habitat plans to restore the building to original condition as closely as possible.  The building is listed on the Local Register of Historical Structures. It was built in 1898, and was used by the City of Danville as the Fire Station manned by black firefighters until it closed in 1958.

Habitat for Humanity of Danville plans to use the lower portion of the building for storage and a place to stage some construction activities, like pre-building walls, constructing storage sheds, etc.   The upstairs portion of the building will be used for office space and meeting rooms.  The building, located at 705 North Walnut Street, will be the physical address for Habitat for Humanity, which had no previous physical address.

The restoration process is in progress, and will be completed as funds become available.
